Reaching the next 650 million subscribers

Extending coverage and capacity to customers in rural areas presents mobile operators with both an opportunity and a significant challenge. An opportunity, because globally, over two-thirds of potential mobile subscriber growth lies in such regions; a challenge, because the business case for deploying such networks has in the past not been convincing.

The sector is also diverse: isolated communities, holiday homes and single dwellings in the developed world each have their own requirements. A different proposition is presented by a remote village in an emerging economy, tens of miles from the nearest existing infrastructure: in many African countries, 3G deployment beyond the major cities can be as low as 10% of population. Here the rewards could be substantial: the operator that solves the problem has the opportunity to become the community’s definitive means of connectivity – not just for voice and Internet traffic, but also for added value services like IPTV and community healthcare support.

Quortus’s rural solutions help to solve the barriers of low ARPU and high backhaul cost in these markets. Our award-winning EdgeCentrix technology enables the use of small cells alongside a local EPC that moves intelligence out into the network, with satellite optimization where this is the preferred means of backhaul.

These technologies help not just the MNO, but also the satellite operator, which can offer ‘as a service’ backhaul and optimization.

The Quortus solution delivers 2G/3G/4G LTE coverage with voice, SMS and data services, reducing strain on the macro network and backhaul by offloading voice, data and signalling; the network can be efficiently tailored to local needs, by moving security and policy management close to the user; and latency and congestion are reduced with local call handling and switching.

Where available, fixed LTE, microwave, high power WiFi or DSL, as well as satellite, may all be used as backhaul.
